About Cardiff West

CARDIFF West is one of the four Parliamentary and Assembly seats that cover the Welsh capital city.

It comprises of the electoral wards, Caerau, Canton, Creigau, St Fagans, Ely, Fairwater, Llandaff, Radyr and Riverside.

The different wards are quite distinct in nature, ranging from Cardiff's 'Welsh quarter', Pontcanna, to the culturally and socially mixed wards of Canton and Riverside, to the relatively rural ward of St Fagans which houses the world-famous Museum of Welsh Life.

Cardiff West contains some major attractions and landmarks that include Llandaff Cathedral, the BBC Wales headquarters, Cardiff City and the Cardiff Blues' new football and rugby stadium and Glamorgan's Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground.

Except for four years in the 1980s, when the seat was held by the Conservative MP Stefan Terlezki (1983-87), the seat has been held by the Labour Party since the 1945. Between 1945 and 1983, the seat was held by George Thomas (later Viscount Tonypandy), who held Cabinet Office as Secretary of State for Wales in the late 1960s and later sat as Speaker of the House of Commons between 1976 and 1983. Between 1987 and 2001, the MP for Cardiff West was Rhodri Morgan, the First Minister of the National Assembly for Wales.
