0 British Bangladeshi MP visits Riverside

BRITAIN'S first ever Bangladeshi MP visited Cardiff West this week to meet members of one of the city's most multicultural wards.

Rushanara Ali, the Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, was invited to Riverside by local MP, Kevin Brennan, to meet residents with Kevin and Labour's candidate in the Riverside Council bye-election, Iona Gordon.

During the day, Rushanara, Kevin and Iona visited Women Connect First which help women with mentoring, learning English, computer skills and with job applications.

They then visited the Riverside Community Centre where they met residents from a number of backgrounds who attend English classes.

Following a lunchtime reception with community members, the day continued with a meeting at the Bangladesh Association Centre in Machen Place before visiting local businesses such as Jackie’s Saree shop on Tudor Street.

Talking about strong communities and why politics and elections are important to places like Riverside, Rushanara Ali said, "Voting in elections, local and national is very important to make your voice heard," she said.

"When you decide to go out of your house and join a class to improve your English, your computing skills, maths and so on you learn and you change, by learning you are able to encourage your children with their school work, the skills, qualifications and confidence you gain help your job prospects so you have a better chance to getting a job."

Kevin Brennan, MP for Cardiff West, added, "Rushanara is a fantastic role model for the Bangladeshi community, showing that it is possible in modern Britain for people of all backgrounds to achieve high office.

"Her visit will have inspired the next generation of young people of Bangladeshi origin in Cardiff to follow their dreams."
