CARDIFF West MP, Kevin Brennan has slammed the UK Government after his research found the Con-Dem coalition’s decision to axe a scheduled rise in Child Tax Credit in 2012/13 will remove £50m from around 400,000 children in Wales
Mr Brennan asked the House of Commons library to find out the financial effect on families in Wales of the UK Government’s decision to axe the rise in Child Tax Credit.
“I was shocked and appalled to learn the UK Government’s decision to abandon the rise in Child Tax Credit will remove £50m from around 400,000 children in Wales,” said Mr Brennan.
“For this Tory-Lib Dem Government to punish hard working Welsh families while they systematically drag their feet on dealing with the problem of banker’s bonuses is quite disgraceful.
“Hard working families, families with new babies and lone parents trying to find work should not be bearing the brunt of this Government’s austerity measures.
“The Institute for Fiscal Studies estimate a family with two children will be an average of £1,250 a year worse off by 2015 because of this Government’s tax and benefit reforms.
“This kind of money may be peanuts to the millionaires in the cabinet but this is an awful lot of money to many families in Wales.”
