I, like every Welsh Cricket fan, was saddened at the tragic and premature death of one of our brightest talents Tom Maynard at the tender age of just 23.
There is little doubt that Tom was heading for big things in his career. His style of play was eerily like his father, Matthew.
He was gifted with supreme athletic ability in the field and was superbly aggressive with the bat with a First Class Average of 32.65 and rising.
Like his legendary father I have no doubt he would have represented the England test side as he had the England Lions side.
The fact that Tom made a lasting mark on Glamorgan County Cricket Club, Surrey County Cricket Club and the English and Welsh Cricket Board has been well documented.
What has not been as widely documented is that Tom spent a large portion of his early cricketing career honing his talents at St Fagans Cricket Club in my constituency.
Tom joined St Fagans as an 8 Year Old and last week the newly set up Tom Maynard Trust and Tom’s family donated a new bench in Tom’s honour to the club.
It is fitting that the club that obviously meant such much to Tom has a permanent reminder of him on the boundary of this community cricket club.
The Tom Maynard Trust has been set up to help to develop the career of disadvantaged cricketers and are holding several fund raisers during the summer.
On 20th and 21st of August there is a two day bike ride to help raise funds for the trust. People can donate to their effort by clicking http://www.justgiving.com/teams/TomMaynard.
