Kevin Brennan MP recently led the debate in Westminster Hall on Foodbanks in Wales to highlight the growing number of people in Wales relying on Foodbanks.
Figures show the users of Foodbanks in Wales has trebled in the last twelve months, up from around 11,000 to just fewer than 30,000. The growth in Wales is twice the UK average and Welsh Labour MPs want the government to recognise this as a symptom of their failing social and economic policies.
Cardiff West MP Kevin Brennan, who led the debate for Labour, said that the reason more people are using Foodbanks is because of the rising cost of living and the impact of the UK Government's economic policies.
Speaking after the debate, Mr Brennan said, “The explosion in people using Foodbanks across Wales is a symptom of the rising cost of living that's hitting Welsh families and is being made worse by the UK Government’s failing economic policies and welfare reforms.
"The Food Bank in my constituency is now having to feed 70% more people than this time last year and almost 50% of those fed in Cardiff say they need help because of benefit cuts and delays.
"Ministers in the Tory led coalition Government should be asking themselves, what the impact of their policies will be on the hundreds of thousands of Welsh families who’re already struggling to make ends meet."
Last month, a Spokesman for the Prime Minister said that “benefits are set at a level where people can afford to eat” and that Foodbanks are the “right place for people who feel that they need a bit of extra food.”
Welsh Labour say these remarks show how out of touch and complacent the Tory-led government is and they’re calling on the Wales Office to totally disown the remarks.
Shadow Welsh Secretary Owen Smith MP added, “These comments, which come from the very top of the Tory-led government, are an insult to the Trussell Trust, their thousands of volunteers, and the thirty thousand people in Wales who relied on a Foodbank last year.
“For many of these people, visiting a Foodbank will not have been an easy to thing to do and the last thing they want to hear from Downing Street is the view that Foodbanks are for people who just want a bit of extra food.
“Welsh Labour MPs know that this absolutely isn’t the case and that, in reality, Foodbanks are an invaluable lifeline for those under immense financial pressure.”
