The morning began with an extensive tour around the House of Lords. Much of the history and the working of the House was explained and the group were able to enjoy a close up view of the magnificently gilded throne and the Woolsack in the Chamber. After visiting the Chamber of the House of Commons, the party made their way to historic Westminster Hall and then continued to Portcullis House for lunch. Over lunch, Mrs Morgan introduced the party to the Rt Hon Paul Murphy MP, Secretary of State for Wales, and Gareth Thomas, MP for Clwyd West, Mr Murphy's Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS). During their tour, the party were also delighted to spot several other ‘parliamentary celebrities at close quarters, including Robin Cook, Jack Straw, Dennis Skinner and the newly elected MP for Ogmore, Huw Irranca-Davies. They witnessed the Speaker's ritual procession into the Chamber before making their way into the public gallery. During Question Time and impressive exchanges between Tony Blair and Ian Duncan Smith, there was the added excitement of a heckler who interrupted Mr Blair's reply on a question about Afghanistan who, still shouting, was promptly removed from the gallery by the attendants. After Question Time, the group was again met by Mr Brennan, in whose Cardiff West constituency the Danybryn Home is situated. This was a day that none of the party will forget. Everybody at Westminster made them feel welcome and it enabled them to gain a fuller appreciation of the parliamentary process. |
