Press Release
LOCAL MP CALLS FOR MORE CARE FOR CARERS Cardiff West MP, Kevin Brennan has stressed his continued support for Carers UK – the organisation helping carers to continue their invaluable work.  Today marks Carers Rights Day across the UK, helping to raise awareness about the situation faced by unpaid carers who look after family, partners or friends in need of help due to illness, frailty or disability.

Kevin Brennan MP said:

“We mustn’t underestimate the importance that carers play in our society.  We need to offer carers all the support and advice possible to make the lives of these extraordinary people comfortable.  I offer my full support to Carers UK and congratulate them on their hard work.”

As many as one in five carers give up work in order to provide care – a proportion of which would still be working if they received advice and support earlier.  Around 1180 events staged around Britain will seek to highlight the new flexible working rights available to carers.  The Cardiff branch of Carers UK are holding an information day at the University of Wales and there will be drop in surgeries at both the PRT Carers’ Centre in Cardiff and the Alzheimer’s Society.

•    On the 6th April 2007, carers gained the right to request flexible working hours from their employer.  The new right was introduced under the Work and Families Act 2006.  Research by the CBI and British Chambers of Commerce shows that nine out of ten requests have been granted.
